A Different Religion

Beautiful, historic church buildings all across the United States and the world are homes to “liberal” Christianity. We’ll tell you why those buildings are really spiritual graveyards, and why what is believed and taught by the people in them is really not Christianity at all.

  1. The discussion is very much in line with Dr. Machen’s book, except, I think, for one minor difference. Liberal “Christianity” does borrow heavily from political or philosophical liberalism (Eerdmans,1923, pp.14-15). Both political and Christian liberalism are socialistic and are based on relativism. The speakers bring up the idea of tolerance, for example. Then there are ideas such as “old is bad and new is good” and the liberals’ overall hatred of history. Dr. Machen mentions the liberal doctrines of the universal brotherhood of man and the universal fatherhood of God. Political liberalism resists established religion because it contains absolute truths and dogmas which divide humanity. And doesn’t the politcal idea of democracy entitle every member of the congregation to teach from the pulpit? So, does liberal “Christianity,” which is no Christianity at all, have “absolutely nothing to do with politics?”
Whatever the connection, it is so comforting to see that nearly a century after Dr. Machen’s book, the spiritual decline of which he writes is still a concern for true ministers of the Gospel, that they have not given in to the venom of liberalism, and that they continue to battle against it. Glory to God!
