The people of Israel broke the first commandment when they used the golden calf in their worship. But they also broke the second commandment, which prohibits making images of God. After all, Aaron pronounced that the next day after he created the golden calf they would have a festival to Yahweh. The golden calf was incorporated into their worship of Yahweh. Many churches do the same thing today when they worship the right God in the wrong way. In this story you learn that Israel is saved because of Moses’ mediation on their behalf. His mediation foreshadows Christ’s mediation for His people who have the same impulse to worship God wrongly.
