In this sermon we argue the unity of the Old and New Testaments. Both Testaments speak to the Covenant of Grace and their respective signs of this covenant. When we examine the theology of both the Old and New Testaments with respect to the signs of the Covenant we cannot and shall not deny infant Baptism.

Baptism replaces circumcision as a sign of the covenant of grace; therefore, Christian parents who are in the Covenant of Grace are commanded to baptize their children.

The author of this passage issues a very stark warning to the church that some may deny Christ. Yet, he also issues comfort that those who are justified by grace through faith alone will never reject the truth of Christ. His point is that Christ preserves those who confess their sin of wanting to stray and rely on Christ’s work of complete commitment to the Father.

Because of the nature of the Mosaic Covenant Israel lived under God’s threat. In fact Paul calls this covenant a “covenant of death and condemnation.” This is why Paul also compares and contrasts the Mosaic Covenant with the New Covenant, which has greater glory. For those in Christ in the New Covenant there is no more threat.

This passage contains one of the most unusual stories in the Old Testament: Moses’ wife, Zipporah, circumcises their son in order to appease God’s anger. This story reveals the significance of circumcision and, in the New Testament context, the significance of Baptism. Both are signs of the Covenant of Grace, which God commands must be applied to believers and their children.
