Christians believe that God calls His people to himself through His Word preached from a pulpit or read in the Bible. There is, of course, ample historical and philosophical evidence for those so inclined. The Christian claim, however, is that sinful humanity will refuse to believe even obvious evidence because of our natural enmity towards God and so reading a Gospel, such as the Gospel of John, is a good way to go about it.
