Louis Berkhof’s best known work is his 700+ page Systematic Theology.
He was aware, however, that despite its virtues not everyone would work through it. And so we have smaller versions of it – a Manual of Christian Doctrine used by high school catechism classes for a generation and an even smaller Summary of Christian Doctrine.
His Summary is an excellent place to get an overview of Reformed beliefs, beginning with God and ending with the resurrection.
A systematic study gives the frame work for better understanding sermons and bible studies.
The book has Bible verses not only to illustrate particular points, but also for memorization as well as study questions and references for more thorough explanations.
Use it as a devotional and chew on a piece of theology, keep it as a reference for specific studies, read it cover to cover to see the links between different teachings, or use it a curriculum for a Jr. High and High School students as well as adults – in groups or in families.
