How should we react to the fall of Ted Haggard? In this first show of two, we look inside at our own hearts and outside at the evangelical cult complex to learn some sobering lessons. We also think about a wife’s obligations to an adulterous husband and a church’s obligations to an adulterous pastor.

  1. “King of the Hill” has some great commentary on modern American christianity. I’m not sure who all the writers are, but there’s definitely some people on that show who’ve had first had experience in evangelical circles.

There’s one episode where the son is thinking about becoming a Buddhist. The dad is really upset with this and tells him he can’t become a Buddhist because he’s a Methodist. The son asks, “Well, what’s Methodism?” The dad has a blank look on his face. The next scene it shows them in their female pastor’s office where she says “Methodism is the rejection of Calvinism.” 😀

There’s another episode that’s a great commentary on the christian youth movement, that every youth pastor needs to watch.

  2. Are you guys planning on dedicating another show re: the Haggard commentary, which aired last night on HBO?

  3. Good question. We might some time down the line. It seems like new information keeps coming out of this story, so we might want to wait a bit longer until we see what else emerges.
