Luther’s pithy response at the Diet of Worms, “Here I stand on the Word of God alone. I can do no other. So help me God†summarizes the foundational truth of Protestantism, scripture alone. The final and objective authority for the church is the word of God alone. This message examines the meaning of this Protestant sola and shows its basis in scripture.

Yes, unfortunately we are having some issues with the flash player. While we are working on fixing the issue, you can always click on the Download MP3 link and your browser will open another window which will immediately play the file.

I wonder if you could comment on the fact that “Sola Scriptura” isn’t mentioned in the Bible. It seems that Catholics always use that arguement to prove that the Church is also authoritative. What do you say to them?

Ayin,
You are correct, that the words “scripture alone” do not appear in the Bible; however, neither do the words “the church determines the canon” or “Papal infallibility” or “the assumption of the Virigin Mary” appear explicitly in scripture either which are all things the Roman Catholic church teaches. The fact that the Bible does not contain a specific word of set of words we might use to describe our doctrinal position in no way undermines the doctrine. If it did, it would invalidate numerous doctrines. For instance, where in scripture do you find “Trinity” or “homoousios” or “sacrament” used in reference to baptism or the Lord’s Supper? The mere use of corresponding words does not establish a doctrine, its the concept. Is the concept “sola scriptura” there? Of course it is. You heard some of the arguments for that in the sermon. So, I would not let the lack of the specific use of “sola scriptura” in the Bible.
Thanks for listening and thanks for the question.
