The historic practice of most churches has been to “fence” the Lord’s Supper. That is, the minister must offer an invitation to partake of the Lord’s Supper only to those who are worthy. The worthy are those Christians, wretched sinners that they are, identified as belonging to true churches. All of this must be explained carefully to those sitting in the church service. Now, in our day, most churches don’t fence the Lord’s Table. It is helpful, then, to explain why this must still be done: it is commanded in the Scriptures.
Scripture Lesson: 1 Corinthians 11:17-34
